The last great In Flames album - By: Hedon, 10 Jan 2008
You all know In Flames. You know the score with this band. Colony, while not drastically different to Whoracle, is a natural progression on the sound with tighter playing, more concise songwriting & generally its just a bit more together.
It also shows a great deal of variety. Embody the Invisible is a great opener with a wickedly cheesy lead & almost a punky feel to it. Scorn & Coerced Coexistence are classic In Flames which brilliantly show of a fetish for twin guitar melodies & uplifting leads. And then the title track with its tight grooves; a great head-banging number. The best has to be Ordinary Story & the brooding Zombies Inc, which show that In Flames can easily match speed & aggression with atmosphere & melancholy.
This is probably my favorite CD by the band. It's not their heaviest & it's not exactly brutal or extreme, but this seems to be when In Flames managed to hit the nail right on the head with their desire to combine melody & aggression. And it is without a doubt their most energetic & passionate performance (dare I say upbeat?); every song just blasts out the speakers like there's no tomorrow & each member of the band really put a lot into this. Even Whoracle, which arguably had better songs (and better vocals) doesn't match this album on the sheer energy & intensity of the performance
If their one point I could complain about with Colony it's that Anders voice started to get a little bit weaker, but this is no wear near as bad as the vocals on Clayman. Thankfully, clean vocals are used sparingly to great effect
In retrospect, this is a final testament to the greatness that is In Flames & their last true melodic death album; a real piece of metal history. If you've any interestin melodic death or In Flames you really should get this along with Whoracle & Jester Race.
beyond the realms of a masterpiece - By: sean paul mccann, 22 Feb 2006
May i be totally honest?when i first heard this i wasnt blown away as i had heard clayman before this & that is one masterpiece if ever i heard one,butin time i learnt to realise that this is the first world classin flames album,an album that is something more than flawless.Now i know fans of the bands earlier albums will go mad at that statement but believe me when i say,that i have all of their old stuff & love it all,but,this is their first album with the current line up & the songs ebb & flow into each other & the result is an album that is as catchy as a baseball & as aggressive as an line of gorillas when there is only one banana left.
the album opens like a tornadoin your living room with the all time classic embody the invisible,ordinary story follows & it is evident that the band are more melodic than ever & the songs are effortlessin their fusion of metal & melody,scorn follows & is certainly one of the greatestin flames songs ever.Other classics such as colony,behind space 99 & insipid 2000 can also be found here & it is a case of accepting the simple truth readers that this is the bandin flames always wanted to be,and from this desire came their ultimate masterpieces clayman & reroute to remain.In flames are certainly a band that can cause two friends to fight over whichin flames period bore the greatest albums,it was from this recordin 1999 thatin flames really found their fire.
Colony - By: , 01 Oct 2005
Another of In Flames' great albums. Colony is similar to Clayman & it sets out the intent right from the off with the pick slide & melody of Embody the Invisible.
The best tracks are probably:
the experimental Scorn, repeating & slightly re-addressing itself as the song progresses;
the awesome harmony of Resin;
the heavy riffing of Coerced Coexistence;
title track Colony with its amazing drum patterns & awesome hooks.
A superb album & surely one of In Flames' best.
Blinding - By: Sweet_Calamity, 14 Aug 2004
This is the first In Flames album i bought, having heard the anthemic "Embody the Invisible" on Tony Hawk Underground. The music could best be described as a beautiful storm, brilliantly melodic, with some keyboard/synth bits, which enhance the crafted riffs. If those who think Slipknot are the bestin extreme metal (I could not believe it when i heard In Flames had toured SUPPORTING Slipknot!) checked this out, they would be blown away.
This was my first In Flames CD... - By: , 03 Mar 2004
This was the first album by In Flames that I've bought & I'm thoroughly impressed. Their music is both catchy & powerful.
The first two tracks are an amazing introduction. 'Embody The Invisible' has a cheezy start but you want to hear it more & more. 'Ordinary Story' is equally as amazingin delivery & is head-bang-a-plenty.
Other good tracks are 'Colony', 'Zombie Inc' & 'Resin'.
The only reason this CD didn't get 5 stars was that it looses focus a little towards the end, but the best songs on this album easily compensate for this. For me, this was an amazing introduction to In Flames & I will be buying more very soon.
