Indeed a brilliant rock album/band - By: MrMetalheadO'Hagan, 25 Jul 2008
Thin Lizzy has always been big because they are one of the most famous rock bands & the fact that they are Irish & that type of hype never appeals to me it's happend to bands like U2 & Snow Patrol, & they arn't as good as everyone says they are. But Thin Lizzy are a great irish rock n roll band. Made famour by their songs The Boys are backin town & Whiskey In The Jar, they are more then just those 2 awesome songs. This album for example, all the songs are excellent & some brilliant rock n roll riffs. With classics likes Jailbreak, Angel From The Coast & of course The Boys Are Back In Town. This is a brilliant way to start with Thin Lizzy if you're curious about the band, you will already know The Boys are Back In Town so you won't be dissapointed with it. Yes Thin Lizzy are an awesome rock band, if you love you're rock then this is a must buy.
The classic album from a classic rock band! - By: Mr. B. S. Neighbour, 13 Jul 2008
Lizzy are my favourite band so I own pretty much everything they ever released. I always find it hard to nail one of their albums down as the best released as the choice changes daily. Ultimately most fans would argue this is it. The albums that preceeded Jailbreak improved with each output but as with many releases all had their weaker moments up to Jailbreak. This album is certainly the moment the bands star rose into view even providing them with some minor chart success.
Phil & the band were touring endlessly & honing their craft & this album was the fruit of that. Lynotts songwriting provides us with wonderful moments throughout & the band are rock solid musically too. This album was probably Lynotts creative peak lyrically although he still had his momentsin later albums. So many facets of his personality can be foundin these songs & his imagination was yet to be muddied by the rock n roll lifestyle that later took hold of him. His fascination with Irish history (emerald) & American history (Cowboy Song & Massacre) were both well represented here.
If you plan to explore Thin Lizzys journey through rock history this is arguably the best place to start - although I started with Live & Dangerous which is the greatest live rock album ever recorded bar none!
Go get em!
not half bad ! - By: sean paul mccann, 13 Dec 2007
The general Consensus appears to be that this is a masterpiece,i can not go along with that notion, this is a sturdy piece of work but is let down with some drab enough sounding tracks, just two perhaps but they mean that for my opinions worth, this is good without being vital.
Releasedin 1976,and with the band a four piece, they would essentially perform as three piecein 1977,this album contains two tracks of notable distinction, firstly the title track with his snappy riff & the classic song 'the boys are backin town' a track synonymous with the group.
The album also contains some very confident & assured tracks such as 'warriors' & the mild but brilliant 'running back'.'Ange from the coast' & 'the cowboy song' seem fillerin comparison to the albums flow & strengths & they ruin what could have been a very fine album, this isnt as good as 'bad reputation' no matter how you spin it but is still a good piece of work & some 31 years old to boot hey.
Breakthrough - By: D. J. H. Thorn, 14 Aug 2007
This is one of the last Lizzy albums I've heard. I'd agree it's the best studio album, yet it isn't the one I play the most. I prefer to listen to 'Fighting' & 'Black Rose.' A strange comment, I know, but I find the earlier album a bit warmer & the later one more polished. 'Jailbreak' has the best songs though. The title track kicks off with those crunching, growling chords that also set the live album off. 'Warriors' & 'Emerald' carry the same weight & 'Cowboy Song' provides the warmth. 'The Boys Are Back In Town' is, of course, the album's crowning glory & the band's signature tune. There are mellower moments among the other tracks, but 'Jailbreak' is strong throughout.
Creme de la creme - By: Stephen Sandford, 12 Mar 2007
Largely regarded as Lizzy's finest hourin the studio. However, you could pick any album from Nightlife, Fighting, Jailbreak, Johnny The Fox, Bad reputation & Black Rose & find 9 or ten songs that are simply classics. Phil Lynott was the best & most versatile rock songwriter ever. This album was produced with an almost live & very exciting feel with screaming lead guitars that exude musicianship - unlike many rock guitarist who simply try & play as fast as possible. Lynott & Brian Downey (rocks finest drummer), anchor everything with a solid but flamboyant rythym section. Phil was often seen to be the weakest link musicianship wise, but his timing & ability to 'swing' was more akin to a funk/soul type bassist & second to none.
A little known fact is that the bands major hit (The boys are backin town) was almost excluded from this album as not being good enough.
If you like good songs, then buy this album. If you are a music lover, buy all the albums mentioned above, & you will hear rock, funk, pop & soul played by four of the worlds finest musicians, & the best rock band ever.
