Excellent early stuff - By: Scotty, 23 Oct 2007
ah the days when REM were an up & coming secret. There are some great songs on here, so much better than the stuff they do now. This album contains all the songs from just before the absolute golden era of REM (Orange, Out Of Time, Automatic For the People). The early signs of their creative genius are herein songs like Perfect Circle, The One I Love, Fall On Me & Finest Worksong.
You probably won't have heard of many of the tracks but I can assure you they are excellent.
The classic early years - By: M. Smith, 09 Oct 2005
Chances are you won't know most of the songs on this album, if, like me, you first heard of REM around the Green/Out of Time years. In fact, the only ones I'd heard of were The One I Love & It's The End Of The World As We Know It. If you're the same, don't let that put you off though as this album is full of incredibly beautiful songs that will introduce a whole new side to the band.
I wasn't too keen on this album at first, but soon the tunes started to grow on me, & now this CD rarely leaves my stereo. From the early mumblings of Radio Free Europe & Perfect Circle to the truely amazing Fall On Me & Cuyahoga, it's impossible not to fallin love with this collection.
It's a shame that recently the band have lost their way, so instead of buying Reveal or Around The World, investin this & some of their earlier albums (especially Murmur) as you won't be disappointed.
Good stuff - By: , 16 Aug 2003
This album is full of REM's lesser known songs. This doesn't mean that they're no good though. From the minute you turn on the ablum, the sound is amazing. Perfect Circle is one of the most beautiful & moving songs I've heard, with an absolutly gorgoues chorus. Talk About The Passion is one of those songs you can listen to, & just listen. (Don't go Back to) Rockville is a groovy summer song, & is really uplifting. Fall on Me is another beautiful track, as is Cuyahoga. The album endsin one of my favourite It's The End Of The World (And I Feel Fine) & is maybe a reminder to everyone out therein the world, who are alwaysin danger. This album is a must-buy, & will lighten up your day.
Buy this instead of Eponymous - By: , 05 Oct 2001
This collection undoubtedly offers the best coverage of REM up to 1987. It contains all their best songs of the period (although there are many more classics on the albums) such as The One I Love, Radio Free Europe, Pretty Persuasion & the gorgeous Cuyahoga. This offers much better value for money than the decidedly patchy coveraqge offered by Eponymous. So go & buy this today to hear some of the best (and freshest) music that REM have recorded.
