A little bit of nostalgia... - By: Mrs. N. L. Vincendeau, 02 Mar 2008
The original vinyl album was one of my birthday presents the year the film came out. I remember being bored senseless by the very silly film of the same name (even though I'm a dyed-in-the-wool McCartney fan), but the album was full of great songs which introduced a young Beatles fan to Wings.

I like the very 80s arrangements & the No More Lonely Nights playout is great. There are a few little gems on this that show both McCartney's skill as a musician & some of his own nostalgia for days gone by. And the song "Wanderlust" is what I bought this for - that doesn't appear on Wingspan or any other album, as far as I'm aware.

Worth a fiver of anyone's money...
Great piece of work from a talented guy! - By: K. M. STEVENSON, 08 Sep 2007
I first saw the film of the same name on tv some years ago, it was then I fellin love with the music, as this album combines some Beatles classics such as "The long & winding road" & "Yesterday" with his own classic such as "Silly Love Songs", it was about 23 years ago that I bought the album on cassette, I have been playing it for such a long time, that the tape has somewhat withered!, so to get this fantastic album on cd was fab, as now I can play it over & over again!. This album measures up to the superb talents of Paul's works, it's very pleasing to listen to time after time, & to sing along to with the old favourites within the album. This is one of his best albums, I would go to say that it is a masterpiece, & it is as fresh as was when it was first releashedin 1984 as it is today.
very enjoyable - By: Kevan John Kite, 04 Nov 2006
I like this album, although I must confess the film was rather dissappointing. Having read most of Mr Heaton's reviews (as below) & finding myself agreeing with him on most occasions, I do find that I have an opposite point of view here. I have always liked the idea of the individual Beatles reworking some of their great songs. Although I do hate most cover versions by other artists. The fact that McCartney has done it here has raised questions. Although "Yesterday" sounds very simular with only a horn section included the improvementin sound quality makes all the difference as it does on "Good Day Sunshine". For me the new version of "The Long & Winding Road" is at least as good as the original & the sax solo is simply beautiful.
"Ballroom Dancing" from the "Tug of War" album gets a great work over with the inclusion of some great heavy guitar riffs, much better than the original & even "Silly Love Songs" for me with it's new futuristic sound is great & McCartney plays a fantastic bass solo. A great version. The two new songs "Not Such a Bad Boy" & "No Values" are good McCartney rockers & have a very live feel, which is the way it isin the film, the band rehearsingin an attic. The album & film received poor reviews which makes me think that McCartney will be reluctant to re-work more Beatles & Wings classic, but I for one would like to hear some of the old sixties numbers with new production & a few new ideas. That is why for me "Tripping the Live Fantastic" was such a great live album because the new sounding Beatles numbers, "Fool on the Hill" is just amazing. However on a negative side the inclusion of a further two versions of "no More Lonley Nights" on the McCartney Collection calalogue version of this album is a bit too much.
Avoid - By: John Heaton, 28 Mar 2005
As a film it didn't really work. And as an album even less so. For at leastin the film there is some kind of pointin reworking old songs, although a pretty tenuous one it must be said. But at least 'Eleanor's Dream' is atmospheric on film &in some other cases we get to see Paul perform the songs. But on record, the remakings of 'Here There And Everywhere' , 'Yesterday', 'Good Day Sunshine' & 'Eleanor Rigby' are thoroughly pointless & vastly inferior to the 1960s originals. There is a case for arguing a case of writer's block on the part of McCartney circa 1984. There are also re-writes of 'So Bad', ' Ballroom Dancing' & 'Silly Love Songs' from the solo years. Why? And of the new songs, only the superb 'No More Lonely Nights' is up to any kind of scratch. It is utterly brilliant. But one song cannot carry an album unfortunately. The two new rockers 'No Values' & 'Not Such A Bad Boy' sound like Back To The Egg rejects. The former was apparently from a dream Paul hadin which The Stones performed this song. Well I can't speak for Mick & Keith but I rather think this would not have warranted a place on their album from this period 'Undercover' (1983), so utterly bland is the lyric & melody & tempo. I'm not saying that these tracks are dire, just that they are so lackingin any inspiration. And we have become accustomed to at least expect some of that with McCartney's work. The reworked disco version of 'No More Lonely Nights' is perhaps the most annoying thing he has ever released.

This is a fan speaking. Who hated all those turkey jibes which surrounded the release of this film. At least as a film it may one day have its day,in the way that 'Mystery Tour' has had. I doubt it. But as for the album, it will remain at the rock bottom of all McCartney's solo releases. It has neither the bravery or daring of a misjudged solo album nor the coverage or best versions to warrant classification as a compilation album. It a thoroughly mixed up version of both, with very little to recommend it I am afraid. Aside from one stupendous track, which can be found elsewhere.

Pointless - By: Mr. J. A. Smith, 04 Mar 2004
Now wingspan has No More Lonely Nights & the playout version of that track, there really is no pointin getting this album.

The vast majority of these tracks are re-worked old songsin an inferior form, & with the remastering of those tracksin their original format it means that the novelty of this record, which was to provide a sort of greatest hits before All the Best & Wingspan with cleaner sounding recordings, has worn off.

Not that any of the songs are bad, but its just not worth getting themin this format.
