Their best album! - By: Woodlandweasel, 25 Aug 2008
Sgt. Pepper was revolutionary when releasedin 1967, & although the same can't be said of it now, it's still excellent. The best songs are the title cut (the reprise of which is not so good, however), the unusual but amusing 'being for the benefit of mr. Kite', the clarinets & humourous lyrics of 'when I'm 64', & 'lovely Rita'. This is probrably my favourite beatles' album , but it has one downside: unless you're a fan of eastern music & mysticism & all that, George Harrisons' 'within you without you' is a bit long & boring. I always skip this when listening to sgt.pepperin my car.
TRIPPY, HIPPY, BEARDY AND RINGO - By: Mr. Christopher J. Welch, 18 Aug 2008
Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band is now 41 years old. It's reputation has grown & mutated through the years to a point where there can't be anyonein the world who hasn't, at least, heard of the Beatles 1967 magnum opus. Unless you've livedin a cave for the past 4 decades it will have touched your lifein some way. Guaranteed. It spans generations, musical tastes & whole books have been written about it's cultural significance & historical importance. Pepper has been patiched, re-worked, covered, re-released (countless times) & regularly tops the critics lists of greatest albums ever.
Peter Blake's front cover artwork is legendary. It sold millions & millions of copies & it is a standard bearer for the sixties & swinging London. Sgt Pepper is The Beatles zenith right ?
Well..... no amount of cut out facial hair, military badges & revolutionary recording processes (stand up George Martin) can diguise the fact that Sgt Pepper's songs just aren't as good as those found on Revolver & Rubber Soul. It tries very hard to be the Beatles finest long player but doesn't quite make it.
Paul had taken defacto command of the band by the time recording's beganin late 1966, with the single's Penny Lane & Strawbwerry Fields Forever, & it's his drive & musical ambitions that propel Pepper from the first notes of the rocking title track to the run out groove on 'A Day In The Life'. There is no denying though that there are at least a handful of classic Beatles tracks - John's 'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds', Paul's 'Getting Better', the Ringo showcase 'A Little Help From My Friends' & the gorgeous 'She's Leaving Home'. The groundbreaking 'A Day In The Life' still astounds & the title track, & it's raunchier reprise, highlight that the Fabs could convincingly 'rock out' when they wanted to.
Listening to Pepper still rewardsin spades - but it is an artifact from a certain time & place. That time being 1967 & the places London & Liverpool. There is too much filler & fluff on the album to make it a truely classic record - Lennon especially seemed to have lost his way after the purple period 65-66 - mainly through copious drug usage & general lethargy, but there is still a lot of magic on offer.
It's just so hard to separate the myth from the fact - & maybe that is where Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band really scores - it's a record you MUST hear but might not neccessarily love. Apparently Ringo learned to play chess during the Pepper sessions...
The greatest album of all time? - By: Unsmart, 06 Jul 2008
No, not to me. My favourite album is THE GEESE AND THE GHOST by Anthony Phillips. And my favourite band is Genesis (during the 70's).
Usually when an album is called "the greatest album of all time" it's not particularly good at all. It's justin some way or another unique, without having good material enough to fill the entire album.
SGT PEPPER is however an exception. I was born way after this album came out, so I can't really say how it felt listening to it as something entirely new. I can only guess. The only reason I'm giving this 5 stars is because the songs are really good.
BEATLES' MASTERPIECE - By: C. Bellegarrigue, 15 Jun 2008
And the music will never be the same...
This album was the greatest example of how INCREDIBLE & CREATIVE this group's evolution can be; the mysticism (WITHIN YOU, WITHOUT YOU), the inspiration (SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND), the friendship (WITH A LITTLE HELP OF MY FRIENDS), the romanticism (LOVELY RITA), The psychedelic (LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS), sad stories (SHE'S LEAVING HOME), old melodies (WHEN I'M 64), the mystery (BENEFIT OF MR. KITE!), the chaos (A DAY IN THE LIFE)... there are no words to explain this phenomenal entity... THE MAGIC "PEPPER"!!!
