Look at the cover and judge for yourself! - By: Jasper Wong, 30 Oct 2007
is there another album cover that screams 'vulgar display of power'?
unlike many other bands, who's 2nd album seems to flop dearly, Pantera's second album (or 6th, if you count the self-relased ones), is metal at its most powerful, devestating, & angry state. Songs like Mouth for war, Walk, This Love (absolutely NOTHING to do with the Maroon 5 song of the same name, thank you very much), & a new level have monster riffs & vocals; but the entire album is listenable without skipping any songs. Phil Anselmo's voice without the high pitched wails suits the music well.
if you like the watered down 'metal' of today (i.e. avenged sevenfold, trivium) you will probably think it too angry & heavy. However, if you like Megadeth, MEtallica, Machine head, Iron maiden etc. you will LOVE this.
Also, buy Cowboys from Hell, another amazing album from Pantera
That's what I'm talking about!! - By: The Conman, 10 Jul 2007
If only Pantera were still around today. Who knows how many more great albums they have made. Vulgar Display of Power is usually seen as their best album, & for good reason. One of the main reasons is just because the album was so heavy & aggressive. I have never seen a more fitting album title. One the intense opener Mouth For War gets underway with its absolutely crushing main riff, we can tell that this album will be as skull-pounding as anything you've ever heard before.
The band certainly decided to increase the heaviness this record, especially vocal-wise. Singer Phil Anselmo forgets about singing high notes for the most part & intsead creates an unhinged miliataristic roar style of vocals, creating perhaps the ultimate metal voice. His aggressive style was very brutal which fitted very well with Dimebag's monstously heavy riffs, but was clearly not a death growl. Every member of the band plays to their limit, especially Dimebag whose massive riffs & incredible guitar solos drove the album. All this resultedin a stone cold metal classic. The songs here are mostly very aggressive, heavy & groovy. Even the semi-ballads This Love & Hollow have some very heavy sections. The album is more consistent than Cowboys From Hell & so all the songs are great & infinitely listenable.
It should be known by all metalheads just how important a release this album was backin '92. It not only brought metal back on track after the grunge movement, it also created the groove metal movement, leading the way for bands like Machine Head, Sepultura & Korn to follow.
Overall, this album is as much a metal classic as Master of Puppets, Reignin Blood, Paranoid & The Number of the Beast. It is an absolutely thunderous listen, with a huge sense of aggression & groove. It'll make you bang your head like crazy & it will also make you laugh at all those ridiculous MTV-based emo posers who believe that they are real metal. Metal doesn't get a lot better than this.
An absolute classic - By: Hereward Swallow, 22 Jan 2007
From the first blasts of 'Mouth for War' to the dying strains of 'Hollow' this album remains one of the best metal albums to come out of the nineties. There is a not a single disappointing song, & most songs have frequently been aired at rock clubs across the world. As the name suggests, it's not for the faint-hearted, so it's appeal is probably restricted to those who already have an interestin metal. However anyone who has only recently got into metal will love it (anyone who has been into metal for a while will already have it). One of the most impressive aspects of this album is the production. Despite having been released more than 15 years ago the sound is really fresh & sounds like it was recorded just the other day. Buy it now - you'll love it.
This is THE album to buy. - By: Book Worm, 01 Jun 2006
If you want raw, if you want angry & if you want searing riffs, drumming & kick ass lyrics, then this is the album to buy. Quite simply their best album & a must have for any discerning metal collection. Buy it, buy it, buy it.
