His best album - By: eclectic warrior, 05 Sep 2006
I have the first 6 or 7 albums (on vinyl) by Robert Cray & I believe this is the one to buy first. Possibly the best known songs are the title track & 'Smoking Gun' but really they're all great, especially the first five tracks. He can definitely play but it's the singing & the song writing which come to the fore.
Well worth buying for soul & blues fans alike.
Absolutely fabulous - By: , 08 Nov 2002
Robert Cray is one of the most controversial artistin the history of music. His unique sound of his voice & guitar has established himself as a blues legend. This album contains everything; the amazing voice; the blues guitar rhythm & the beats which accompanies it all. The first three tracks would definitely sum up Cray's skill as a guitarist & singer. I am a great fan of blues & Robert Cray: Strong Persuader is definitely a must buy CD. It has a kind of chill vibe to it & the tune itself is very catchy. Any guitarists would definitely not be disappointed because the improvisation on his solos are definitely on a 'legend' standard.
As much of a legend as Eric Clapton.
Smokin' gun - By: Andy Millward, 07 Dec 2001
Robert Cray has avoided the worst excesses of modern blues & produced a series of smooth, & stylish albums to showcase his excellent guitar technique & fine voice. Maybe not as soulful as a BB King, but a legend nonetheless.
Strong Persuader is a good starting point for anyone new to Cray, particularly the wonderful Smokin' gun.
An essential album from Robert Cray - By: , 30 Jun 2001
Robert Cray has been, & continues to be, a breath of fresh air to blues music. Cray strongly maintains the use of a storyin every song which is traditional to the blues, & he has the great ability to make every song a mini drama of betrayal, or bitterness, hope, or love, or whatever; all moving atmospheric songs which you can actually picture as you listen. This album is outstanding as every track is of the highest quality sung with Cray's usual soulful passionate voice & supported by his sometimes staggered, sometimes flowing, guitar work which is excellent. Listen to 'Smoking Gun', 'I Guess I Showed Her', & 'Right Next Door (Because Of Me)' for starters; every track of this ten track cd is blues at its best. This cd is essential to any blues collection,in fact its essential to any contemporary music collection. Good one, Bob!
Classic Cray - By: , 02 Jun 2000
This CD provides a good starting point for the smooth, slightly jazzy blues sound of Robert Cray. Expect to hear his typical sophisticated sounds with a mixture of mellow & up-beat tracks.
