Not on my lawn you don't! - By: R. M. HILL, 28 Oct 2008
This Brazilian pop band have been going since 1984, & are about to release a new album later this year. Roots their sixth album is utter garbage! Gone are three way harmonies, melodic hooks & classic song structures-instead we get Max Cavalera's unintelligible grunts punctuating half baked thrash riffs & insane drum beats which don't even follow a pattern. There's even chanting monks on here! What were they thinking?

I have no ideal what their costume designer was thinking either, he's completely changed their image & opted for a post-Jurassic neadathal look. In the lead single 'Roots' the video features a group of half nude tribesmen dancing around the band. Cavalera is a terrible actor, his contrived bouts of anger are so transparent it's cringing to watch. One can only assume the film crew brought along a case load of strepsils for him to suck between takes.

This album tanked, a flop, a proper turkey. I have no idea why anyone would get pleasure or any form of entertainment from listening to this album. What a bunch of sell outs! AVOID!
ok, but not Sepultura's best - By: Mr. P. Wiggan, 24 Sep 2006
I was first exposed to Sepultura when i saw the video for Roots Bloody Roots on TV, i was stunned by the pummeling heaviness of the song so i decided to purchase this album. When i got it i felt quite disapointed, there's just too much filler material & none of the songs match the energy & power of Roots Bloody Roots. Along with roots bloody roots, attitude, cut throat & rattamahata are all enjoyable songs but there's just too many filler songs. If you are thinking of purchasing this album i would go for Chaos AD, its a similar style to roots & still has some Brazilian tribal elements but is a vastly superior Album. Although i generally prefer Sep's earlier thrashier stuff (Beneath the Remains & Arise). This CD would be good if you like Nu-Metal (Korn, Slipknot, etc)
One of the best ever metal albums - By: Sean Kelly, 01 Aug 2005
Roots is probably my favourite of sepulura's albums & definately one of my favourite heavy metal albums, & the last sepultura album featuring Max Cavalera. On roots Sepultura finally created that really individual sound, moving on from their thrash era & adding a fantastic tribal sound that hardly any other bands have. It is brilliantly recorded, & the bass (Paulo Jr) & drums (Igor Cavera) have improved greatly, & guitarist Andreas Kisser develops that distinctive sepultura riff sound , more like motorhead, rather than sounding like metallica's riffs on thier previous albums (though not so much on 'Chaos AD'. It includes a great track featuring Jonathan Davis (Korn) & Mike Patton (Faith no more) on vocals too (see track 8, 'lookaway'). There is also an acoustic instrumental, 'Jasco' written & played by guitarist, Andreas Kisser, & another acoustic track, with the chants of the Xavantes tribe.
This fantastic album is a must for headbangers everywhere.

Nearly there - By: , 25 Sep 2004
Before I bought Roots by Sepultura i checked out the video for Roots bloody Roots when i came across it. That song is as heavy as hell yet easy to play & very simple. When i bought the album i was expecting roots bloody roots style songs but every song was different from anything i expected. Sure, they all have power, but they lack the heaviness that the main song (roots bloody roots) provides. Now, people have saying that roots sounds similar to Soulfly's self titled album, & i have to disagree. Roots is the opposite to the 1st Soulfly albumin every way. I would day Roots is not as good as the 1st Soulfly album because it lacks the emotion which that album possesses (mainly anger & frustration)
If you are into Korn or not-very-powerful type of metal bands such as Limp Bizkit or Slipknot then this is the right album to buy.
Average stuff - By: Mr. A. Tiratsoo, 31 Jul 2004
This is where my Sepultura collection ends, as I have no desire to listen to their utter crap, nu-metal albums since they produced 'Roots'. As far as a Sepultura album goes, this is OK - OK riffs, OK vocals etc. The tribal stuff they got going on here is pretty cool, & for me, makes it the more interesting. I really dont't know why people make such a fuss about how great this album is, I mean it's not exactly ground breaking is it? Sepultura should stick to thrash, MUCH more enjoyable. 'Beneath The Remains' is the best Sepultura album by far - THRASH ALL THE WAY!
