For NIN fans - By: Christian W.B., 19 Jul 2003
"Head Like a Hole" contains extended remixes of (arguably) the three best tracks from "Pretty Hate Machine" ('Head Like a Hole', 'Terrible Lie' & 'Down In It'). Fans of NIN will probably love it - I certainly did. The remixes are, to me, perhaps not so sophisticated as are the releases on later NIN manipulation CDs (like "Things Falling Apart" or "Further Down the Spiral"). Nevertheless, they are still excellentin style & production. Critics may call the 'single' a bit repepitive, & maybe it is. But it is certainly never boring. ... "Pretty Hate Machine" was seminal - it blew the top off a hidebound scene. "Head Like a Hole" hammers home the message, reminds you of its importance & takes you back to places deep within. It is not a 'single'in the traditional sense of the word, it's a concept - & a long-lasting one at that! Lovers of mainstream won't like it, NIN fans will.
One for NIN fans - By: Christian W.B., 06 Jul 2003
The US version of "Head like a Hole" (Single) is a good reworking of (arguably) the 3 best tracks from "Pretty Hate Machine". And the CD is a decent length too - not a traditional 'single' release at all. If you're a NIN fan, you'll like it. Love it. On the down side, to me at least, the remixing & manipulations are not so sophisticated or unique as are later manip releases by NIN (e.g. "Things Falling Apart" & "Further Down the Spiral"). And it can get a little repetitive. But, when you start with such a quality product, repetition is not all that bad. In fact, it can be excellent. "Pretty Hate Machine" was seminal; "Head Like a Hole" follows it up, hammers home the message & makes you tingle all over again. It's deep stuff. It makes you think, it makes you rage, it reflects so much that's deep inside & throughout society. Heavy & cool, music & lyrics. If you like mainstream rock or pop, you'rein the wrong section. This is for NIN fans - anyone else probably just won't get it.
