Nasty genius? - By: John Tree, 23 May 2008
Frank Zappa, to misquote Douglas Adams, had a brain the size of a planet. His legacy covers a massive volume of work. In his time, he covered everything from doo wop to seriously avant garde pieces. His monstrous talent, technique & understanding of music was undeniable & he was instrumentalin changing the course of musicin quite a few ways....but there is an underlying cynicism & misanthropy to his ouvre that I have never quite come to terms with.
Like a nasty kidin the playground pulling a girl's pigtails, he could barely conceal his distaste for nearly everyone...but, like Groucho Marx or Chris Morris, his acerbic humour was part of his genius.
The music here moves from singable ditties to the frenetic & almost impossibly complex...intimidating stuff. I suspect the humour was there to deflect accusations of being a smart arse...he WAS technically outstanding, & demanded the same from his band.
So looking at the album as a whole, yes it is impressive...and entertaining...and technically superb...but somehow...somehow...Oh all right, it would be churlish to let my misgivings about him as a person standin the way of recognising his genius...five stars.
One of his best - By: J. Alan, 25 Oct 2007
If I had to compile a top5 for FZ, this would definately bein it.
I bought the LP 20 years ago, & the remastered CD sounds as fresh & crisp nowadays.
Brilliant
Stands the test of time. No doubt about that. - By: El Rayo -X, 04 Jan 2007
I remember reading a review about this album when it was released 1976, under the banner of "One size fits some", & it had a fairly poor review, possibly by someone whose musical zenith peaked at "The Birdy Song". I bought it anyway on the strength of a previous purchase ; "Apostrophe". A good move. I was totally taken aback by the tight, precise musicianship of this recording. Every musical detail was catered for. I won't blether on too much , but the bluesy guitar & piano intro on "Pojamma People" is superb, as is the guitar soloin the same track. Of course there is the expected Zappa quirkiness on this album, but I think that this is possibly one of his finest recordings. Buy it & make your own mind up.
Zappa's masterpiece - By: Jazzrook, 18 Nov 2004
For me, 'One Size Fits All' is Zappa's masterpiece & one of the great rock albums. Zappa's tight, complex arrangements were combined with exciting high-energy rock rhythms & played by a classic edition of The Mothers which included versatile musicians such as Ruth Underwood, George Duke & Napoleon Murphy Brock.
'One Size Fits All' is a record of tremendous vitality & musical intelligence. All of Zappa's diverse influences are evident on this magnificent, multi-layered, sumptuously recorded album which reveals new delights with every hearing.
Anyone who wants to know what Zappa was all about could do no better than start listening here.
