One of the greatest albums - By: Midasin, 28 Sep 2007
I am a longstanding fan of Irish Traditional Music & so, when I was standingin a Birmingham record store quite a few years back & my ear caught the sound of "Happiness", I immediately asked the assistant the name of the band. I couldn't believe my ears at the clear & clean perfection of the sound. I've known this CD for a number of years & yet it always sounds virtually as fresh as the first time I heard it, very unusual for music which can be easily remembered - at least for me!
One of the clever things about this CD is the way the softer songs are interspersed with the more boisterous numbers. The first song `So Long So wrong' is a kind of compromise, but the lively songs, complete with Ron Block's fast banjo picking & (mostly) Adam Steffey's mandolin, are `No Place to Hide' (Adam Steffey vocals), `The Road Is a Lover', `I'll Remember You Lovein My Prayers' & `Blue Trail of Sorrow' (Dan Tyminski vocals), Little Liza Jane (a short speed-record breaking instrumental), & `Pain of a Troubled Life' (Ron Block vocals). All the others are softer Alison Krauss vocals. The last song, written by Ron Block, has a Gospel song, `There Is a Reason', a very moving close to this collection.
This is the last AKUS album to include Adam Steffey, whose mandolin playing is extraordinary. Playing at phenomenal speed, every note is pure & clean. I've never heard anything like it from any other mandolin player of repute. Out of this world!
I have four AKUS albums, all of them of the highest quality & some with songs which, individually, surpass some of the songs on this album. Yet,in spite of this, I still find `So Long So Wrong' the best AKUS album overall & the one which can be played most without tiring. This is probably a good reason why I thought to review it now after so long.
Her Last True Bluegrass album. - By: Michael Jones, 13 Feb 2007
So Long So Wrong was releasedin 1995 & to date marked the last true bluegrass album for Alison.
The album contains her usual mix of traditional bluegrass songs, more contemporary numbers, an instrumental where the band just let rip, truly traditional numbers sung by the male members of the band, including Dan Tyminsky (O'Brother Where Art Thou), & the album rounds off with a gospel number.
The album does not contain a bad song & even today it stands up stongly against her more contemporary recent releases.
The stand out track for me has to be 'Find My Way Back To My Heart.' This was the first Alison Krauss song I ever heard & from that day forward I was converted.
If you don't have this album it is really worth parting some money for. It's beautiful & well worth every penny.
BLUEGRASS YOU DON'T SNORT AT - By: Mr. Richard J. Carter, 10 Mar 2003
Three men with dodgy facial hair, & one clean-shaven other join the ever-so attractive blonde lead female vocalist Alison Krauss (obviously clean-shaven!), feature on 'So Long So Wrong'. The first single from the album of the same name primes the listener for what is to come. Billed as bluegrass 'back to the future' the mix of folk & country output by the group is refreshingly different. Upbeat pacy numbers like the first, with the hallmark Union Station sound, are inter-mingled with thought provoking lyrics brought to life by Krauss.
My favourite slow numbers included 'Happiness', 'Looking In The Eyes of Love' & 'I Can Let Go Now'. Another feature of this album is that the vocals are shared/ alternated among the band. OK so none of the male vocals are that special but they do succeedin providing excellent harmonic support throughout & when substituted with the normal female vocal lead a pleasant change. None of these songs are likely to be smash singles on the US scene but all-in-all an interesting outing. Look forward to their next offering.
A wonderful surprise. - By: , 08 Dec 2001
This is a superb album. The combination of expert ensemble playing, good songs & the perfect voice of Alison Krause came as a glorious & welcome surprise.I bought this CD because I had heard AK sing & wanted to hear more.I didn't expect to be so impressed by both her & Union Station. There isn't a poor track on this album.I am a new convert to bluegrass.
Not as good as the others, but passable - By: , 18 Apr 2001
This CD is good but it's not anything compared to her earlyer CDs. I don't have any major complaint other than the laberling of the songs on the back of the box. there is a silent introduction that is track one, but the first song is called track one but comes up as track two on my CD player display. you may think this is a silly thing to complain about but it gets very irritating. still the Cd itself is worth the buy because it is Alison Krauss.
