Andersen's Fairy Tales 1 - Not For Every Child! - By: JESS, 31 May 2006
Two stories are truly gruesome & VERY violent. Not prince overthrowing dragonin woods to save princess, gruesome & violent. I mean creeping envy, revenge & sadistic murder of an elderly lady & a young boy (amongst other things)!
DEFINITELY NOT for all children by any means. Just had to add this review so more critical (discerning?) parents could be warned if needed.
The remaining stories are great. However, The Little Match Girl is very, very sad! But, so true to how some children today must struggle while those with far more than they need walk by. A deeply poignant tale.
We were very disappointed BUT only with the two rotten ones. I've recorded the fabulous ones & chucked the discs away. Erica Johns reads beautifully. Crystal clear cheeky sounding voice. Smashing.
This double disc set contains readings of The Emperor's New Clothes (excellent!), The Tinderbox (not okay with us), the Travelling Companion, The Ugly Duckling, The Little Match Girl (sob, sob), The Swineherd & Big Claus & Little Claus (Very disturbing!).
Good old fashioned fairy stories, read with panache!! - By: , 27 Jul 2001
The characterisation of human & animals personalities is finely crafted, & has immediate appeal. Thoroughly recommended, particularly for 7-9 year olds.
